Do Album Sales Really Matter ?

Ok . The album sales are in for the big face off between J.Cole and Kanye West . Surprise Surprise , Kanye came out on top ! Ok it wasn’t really a surprise , Kanye West is the type of artist that regardless of what he puts out people and his fans that he has gained over the years will support it . But what’s the biggest surprise to the majority of you all is that Kanye album sales were less than projected . And Cole actually was only about 30k away from tying or beating Kanye “Yeezus” album .

But my question is Does Album Sales Really Matter ? We can look at the number of album sales all day , lets look at Lil Wayne album “I Am Not A Human Being II” sales . He sold 217k and that album sucked . Yeezus sold more than J.Cole but the overall album wasn’t better than Born Sinner . I’ve listened to Yeezus and its not an album that you play from Track 1 to Track 10. You skip around, find a few that you can ride to and that’s about it . It’s not what you’re use to from Kanye , it doesn’t have the hits , probably won’t get much radio play and Bound 2 may be the sound out track that you may want to put on repeat .

If you listen to Cole album, his production has grown tremendously . If you ever doubted the theme of Born Sinner one you listened you understood where he was going with the idea. Even is interludes were great . And the greatness of the moment between Cole and Nas with Let Nas Down/ Made Nas Proud was a great moment in Hip Hop. I say all this to say , we put so much power in the album sales numbers. But if an artist has a huge fan base and has been on top for a while they are going to sale based off who they are , but lets focus on the music . Give the artist who may not be legends their fair review .

Overall , it was a huge win for hip hop . The excitement of the face off got hip
hop fans to actually go out and support the music . Look at Mac Miller numbers as an INDEPENDENT artist he sold 100k , that’s great for an indie artist , the support of his fans and hip hop fans is amazing for helping him accomplish that. You don’t see that support for most indie artist, this might be the only time I care to look at album sales . Salute to Mac Miller and Hip Hop lovers!!
